I came in contact with African religions and magic almost at the beginning of my magical studies.  While in West Berlin 1973 and 1974, one of my room mates was a Nigerian from Lagos, and while I introduced him to european systems of magic, he taught me Yoorba religion (here they call it "yoruba") and jiu-jiu magic.  I certainly was struck by a lot of similarities, and where we could see differences, those were mostly based on the differences of the environments. 

This important background helped me a lot later, when I studied some "new world versions" of African religion and magic, such as Macumba and Voodoo.
